Research Assistant

 The Ecosystem Management Project (EMP) of the NorthWoods Stewardship Center
is seeking a Research Assistant to work on its Water Quality Monitoring
Program. The Research Assistant will assist EMP staff in conducting a
variety of research and monitoring projects focused on monitoring water
quality and assessing threats to water quality in the Lake Memphremagog
Basin of Vermont. This full-time, salaried position is currently funded for
a minimum of eight months and will continue as long as funding allows.

Overview:
 The Ecosystem Management Project is one of three program areas at the
NorthWoods Stewardship Center, a non-profit environmental education,
research, and service organization located in East Charleston, Vermont. EMP
contributes to NorthWoods’s mission of “fostering long-term stewardship of
human and natural communities” through ecosystem research and management on
a 1,214-hectare, privately-owned demonstration site and throughout Vermont’s
Northeast Kingdom. As part of its work, EMP initiated a Water Quality
Monitoring Program in the Lake Memphremagog Basin to assess water quality,
identify sources of water quality impairment, guide efforts to improve water
quality, and educate the public about water quality issues.

Responsibilities:
 The Research Assistant will be responsible for collecting and compiling
data for existing and planned water quality research and monitoring
projects. The primary responsibilities of this individual will include:
1. Conducting field surveys of rivers and streams throughout the Lake
Memphremagog Basin.
2. Conducting Stream Geomorphic Assessments of the Clyde River and other
tributaries of Lake Memphremagog.
3. Entering and compiling data using Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel,
ArcView, and other PC-and Web-based software.
4. Analyzing data collected in these surveys and assessments and
incorporating these data into interim and final project reports.
5. Other duties as needed, including wildlife and habitat surveys.

Qualifications:
1. Significant coursework and/or experience in water quality issues and
survey methodologies. Relevant fields include hydrology, limnology, fluvial
geomorphology, aquatic ecology, watershed planning, etc. A graduate or
undergraduate degree in one of these fields is preferred, but may be
substituted in part by professional experience.
2. Significant coursework and/or experience with Geographic Information
Systems and familiarity with maps, aerial photography, and remote sensing.
3. Proficiency with Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and ArcView, among
other software.
4. Ability and willingness to complete both field work (in a variety of
field conditions) and office work (including data entry and analysis and
other computer-based duties).
5. Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
6. Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and motivated and to maintain a
high standard of quality in all work completed.
7. Proven ability to work both alone and as part of a team.
8. Willingness to work occasional weekends and nights.
9. A valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

Compensation/Benefits:
Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and includes health
and vacation benefits, use of NorthWoods’ facilities and trails, free
attendance at most programs and workshops, and limited use of equipment such
as canoes and snowshoes.
