*SPECIAL CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Scientific Foundations for Ecosystem-Based
Management *

* *

*Target date: **March 30, 2006***

The National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) at the
University of California, Santa Barbara is seeking applications for
working groups and a postdoctoral fellowship.

* *

With funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, NCEAS has
initiated a three-year program of activities involving the analysis and
synthesis of existing data and the development of new tools to address
gaps in knowledge that are critical to successful implementation of
ecosystem-based management in coastal marine systems. NCEAS is
soliciting proposals for two working groups and one postdoctoral
associate (see below).

*Special Note: *We are particularly interested in involving more social
scientists in our project. NCEAS regularly hosts groups of economists,
anthropologists, statisticians, resource managers, and conservation
practitioners along with a wide range of ecologists. The Center offers
very exciting opportunities for interdisciplinary work; we encourage
proposals from people with any background and training.

*Working Groups: * Small groups of scientists collaborating intensively
on the analysis or synthesis of data. Working groups can be designed
following a variety of work plans. Groups at NCEAS typically meet for
four to six days, one to several times a year for up to two years, but
we encourage proposals to use a work plan that best fits the needs of
the research (plans could include workshops, longer meetings, short
sabbaticals, etc.). NCEAS may provide a stipend for a graduate student
research assistant to conduct data synthesis, analysis and other key
activities. We also encourage creativity with proposal topics and
working group membership and are open to any relevant research topic.
Proposals in many areas will be accepted; those that include elements of
the following will be given special consideration.

    * Understanding how to use and/or modify governance and political
      structures to translate EBM science into action
    * Uncertainty and decision analysis; value of information analysis//
    * EBM in developed vs. developing countries//
    * Ecosystem service valuation techniques, utility functions, and
      trade-off models//
    * Ecological and social indicators for EBM//
    * Cross-system comparisons (terrestrial, aquatic, and marine) of EBM
      activities//
    * Ecologically-sustainable yield models for fisheries management//

Funds are available to support 2 Working Groups. Support includes
travel, lodging and per diem. No salary support is provided.

*Postdoctoral Associate: * Appointment is for up to 2 years in residence
at NCEAS to conduct independent research and/or to associate with one or
more Working Groups. We encourage creativity with proposal topics but
are particularly interested in interdisciplinary research and research
that addresses one (or more) of the topics listed above. The
Postdoctoral Associate receives a salary and benefits, a small
discretionary fund, and access to all Center facilities.

We encourage you to contact Ben Halpern ([EMAIL PROTECTED]
<mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; phone: 805.892.2531) with any questions
or clarifications.

NCEAS strongly encourages proposals from women, minorities, and new
investigators, and those that engage both scientists and policy makers.
