Howdy,

Just to clarify the location for these positions, our field sites (eleven of
them) are scattered across north-central florida, but we travel to each of them
from Gainesville, FL. Housing is not provided, but there are generally plenty
of summer subleases available in Gainesville due to UF students vacating for
the summer.

  My apologies for any cross-postings.

  OPS POSITIONS AVAILABLE
University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine

Seeking full-time field technicians for this summer and fall
(approximately early May-Sept) to conduct field work associated with a grant
funded by the National Science Foundation entitled ‘Upper respiratory tract
disease and the environmentally-threatened gopher tortoise’. Significant
training will be provided on blood and other biological sample collection,
comprehensive health assessment techniques, and the collection of morphometric
measurements. Additionally, employees will conduct extensive population surveys
and habitat assessments. Duties will include (but are not limited to) setting
and monitoring traps, collecting samples and data from tortoises, maintaining
field equipment, and processing samples collected.
Experience with tortoises is not required but the ability to perform
strenuous field work in hot and humid working conditions is mandatory.
Applicants must have flexible schedules as work days often exceed 8 hours and
include weekends. This is a rigorous and demanding field position, however, it
offers unique exposure to a wide-range of population ecology and wildlife
disease research techniques.
