"A Primer of Ecological Principles" by Richard J. Vogl It's out of print, but try to contact the author somehow and see if you can get reprints.
Other than that, just tell them to throw away their gardening books and forget everything they've learned about plant culture, that stress is not all bad, and that landscaping is primarily decorating with plants, not ecology.
