Expert Warns That Tick Population Is Very High =20

(Kingston, RI) -- An expert is warning that early results from a =
statewide survey indicate the tick population is ahead of last year's =
record numbers. University of Rhode Island researcher Thomas Mather says =
the warm winter coupled with a wet spring and early summer have caused =
the increase in the insects which can cause Lyme disease. Last year tick =
numbers were 109 percent higher than the average for the previous 13 =
years. Mather cautions that if current weather patterns persist, high =
numbers of ticks are expected later into the summer than usual. People =
are urged to take personal protective measures and implement tick =
control strategies in their yards to reduce the chances of contracting =
Lyme disease.

To be sure, there are deer ticks here in abundance (always have =

The population of dog ticks, on the other hand, is totally out of =
control.
I grew up in southern NH and *never* saw a dog tick until about 5 =
years ago.
Now, every time I come in from being outside, I pick 4 to 10 dog =
ticks off
    me. It's creepy!

So what's the dynamic that's changed since the 1970's and 80's?
    Increasingly warmer winters, wetter summers?
