Research Assistantship (MS or PhD) "Ecology of Neotropical Savannas"
University of Florida =20 A research assistantship (MS or PhD) is available to study the effects of nitrogen deposition on plant communities in Neotropical savannas. This assistantship is part of an NSF-funded collaboration between Brazilian and US scientists and will begin in August 2007; the selected student will have broad flexibility in developing their thesis research within the overall goals of the project. Potential areas of student research include biogeochemistry/ecosystem ecology, plant-animal interactions, and plant population dynamics. =20 Qualifications: Desired skills include (1) a strong background in ecology, botany, or biogeochemistry (2) previous research experience in grasslands or tropical ecosystems and (3) strong quantitative skills. Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as are a willingness to learn Portuguese and conduct field work in Brazil. =20 Stipend/Benefits:The research assistantship includes funds for travel and research, a stipend of $16,000 with annual increases, tuition waivers, and health insurance. Additional travel and research funds may also be available for students participating in the Tropical Conservation and Development Program (www.latam.ufl.edu/tcd). Minority students are eligible for supplementary funding provided by the Sloan Foundation, as well as UFL-SEAGEP Program.=20 =20 The starting date for the Assistantship is August 2007.
