Job Description - Executive Director

TITLE:          Executive Director
LOCATION:       New York State Biodiversity Research Institute, New York 
State Museum, Albany, New York

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The New York State Biodiversity Research Institute 
seeks applicants for a permanent Executive Director.  The Executive 
Director will manage the Institute Program Office and staff, collaborate 
with the Executive Committee to set priorities and goals, exercise 
statewide leadership in advocating the study and conservation of 
biodiversity in the state, and maintain an active research program in an 
appropriate discipline.  The successful candidate will form partnerships 
with academic and cultural institutions to increase an understanding of 
biodiversity, increase access to information on the state’s biodiversity, 
and promote public education of biodiversity, focusing on both regional and 
global aspects.  The successful candidate, under the direction of the 
Executive Committee, will be expected to work closely with the Governor’s 
office, legislature and state and federal agencies, and the public.  The 
Program Office is housed at the New York State Museum and the Executive 
Director is encouraged to develop close ties with Museum scientists and 
programs. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: 

• Provide day-to-day leadership and management of all aspects of the 
Institute’s programs and initiatives. 
• Work with the Executive Committee to continue the strategic planning 
process; implement and update plan as needed.
• Supervise a staff of 4–5 individuals.  Work with the Executive Committee 
to develop priorities for hiring new staff and lead recruitment for same.
• Work with the Executive Committee and Scientific Working Group to develop 
priorities for biodiversity research within the state; oversee the 
administration of a competitive grants program for biodiversity research; 
collaborate with the scientific community to develop a needs assessment of 
biodiversity research priorities within the state.
• Assure that biodiversity information is made available to state 
government, state and federal agencies, and the public.
• Develop and maintain strong partnerships with state and federal agencies, 
academic and research institutions, local governments and planning boards, 
non-profit conservation organizations, private landowners, the media, and 
other involved entities.
• Communicate the importance of biodiversity research and conservation to 
the state’s diverse audiences, including outreach to groups not 
traditionally involved with biodiversity needs and program goals.
• Continue a program of independent research and publishing.
• Secure public and private funding to support the Institute’s research, 
outreach, and technical assistance mission.

The position requires managerial and supervisory skills with four years 
experience, a strong research background, and a commitment to developing an 
understanding of biodiversity and presenting that understanding to a broad 
public.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in a life science discipline and 3 years of 
research experience in that discipline.  Four years of experience managing 
a science-based program and a demonstrated ability to supervise a small 
staff.  Advantage will be given to candidates with strong managerial skills 
and regional experience.  The preferred candidate will have demonstrated 
administrative experience in a research, academic or cultural institution; 
a commitment to the study and protection of biodiversity; demonstrated 
leadership in research; and ability to work with various constituencies.

relative strengths in advocacy, research, grant support and publication 
records. 

SALARY: $64,112 with benefits.

Job Description - Biodiversity Grants Coordinator


TITLE:          Biodiversity Grants Coordinator
SUPERVISOR:     Director, NYS Biodiversity Research Institute
LOCATION:       New York State Biodiversity Research Institute, New York 
State Museum, Albany, New York
DATE:           August 15, 2006

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The New York State Biodiversity Research Institute 
(BRI) seeks applicants for a full-time administrative position as 
Biodiversity Grants Coordinator.  The Biodiversity Grants Coordinator will 
administer the grant review and awards process for the BRI and assist with 
managing the finances of the BRI program office.  The Biodiversity Grants 
Coordinator reports directly to the director or acting director of the BRI.

DUTIES:
• Administer biodiversity grant review and awards process in support of the 
BRI including: (a) compiling and reviewing applications, (b) notifying 
applicants of award decisions, (c) setting up contracts with grant 
recipients, (d) tracking the progress of grant projects and ensuring that 
they are completed on schedule, (e) reviewing contract deliverables to 
ensure they are complete and professional, (f) working with grantees to 
correct deficiencies in products, and (g) processing invoices for payments 
to grant recipients.

• The Biodiversity Grants Coordinator is also responsible for assisting 
with the finances of the BRI program office including: (a) tracking of 
office expenses, (b) processing orders and invoices for the BRI program 
office, and (c) working with BRI program staff in preparing quarterly, 
annual, and biennial reports to document the accomplishments of the program 
office and the status of the grants program.

• Assists in preparing the annual budget for the BRI program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, conservation, natural resources 
or related discipline and 1 year of experience.
2. Proficiency with computer data management and word processing systems 
(e.g., Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word) is required.
3. Excellent organizational and communication skills.
4. Familiarity with New York's biodiversity is desirable.

Job Description - Biodiversity Needs Assessment Coordinator

TITLE:          Biodiversity Needs Assessment Coordinator
SUPERVISOR:     Biodiversity Scientist, NYS Biodiversity Research Institute

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The New York State Biodiversity Research Institute 
(BRI) seeks applicants for a full-time, one-year position as a Biodiversity 
Needs Assessment Coordinator.  The Biodiversity Needs Assessment 
Coordinator will be responsible for managing a facilitated process for 
assessing and prioritizing biodiversity research, conservation, and 
education needs in New York State.  S/he is responsible for securing 
services of professional facilitators and coordinating meetings to gather 
input from a wide variety of experts on New York State biodiversity.  S/he 
is responsible for identifying and communicating with experts, compiling 
summaries of findings (in written, tabular, and graphic forms), and 
preparing interim and final reports.  The results of this process will be 
used to help direct future initiatives of the BRI.  S/he reports to the 
Biodiversity Scientist, works closely with the professional facilitators 
and director or acting director of BRI, and provides support for BRI 
program initiatives, where appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. M.S. degree in biology, ecology, conservation, natural resources or 
related discipline or B.S. degree and 1 years experience working in 
conservation-related field.
2. Proficiency with various computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, 
and PowerPoint) is required.  Familiarity with Arc/GIS and statistics 
software is also desired.
3. Must be able to work both independently and cooperatively as part of 
interdisciplinary team.
4. Excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and 
oral).
5. Familiarity with New York's biodiversity and basic biodiversity concepts 
is especially desirable.
