ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Participates in preserve operations, maintenance and management.  This may 
include one or more of the following functions:
•       Removes exotic species and/or species monitoring
•       Maintains tools and equipment
•       Maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public
•       Prescribed burns assistance


POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Position provides support to The Nature Conservancy’s conservation 
programs in the Florida Keys.  
•       Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, field-based 
stewardship in the marine and terrestrial environment: assisting with the 
GreenSweep program (volunteer workdays, exotic plant control teams, 
neighborhood projects and outreach and education activities aimed at 
control of invasive exotic plants, restoration of native species and fire 
management), assisting with nature preserve management, and assisting 
other conservation groups and agencies with natural resource management 
activities.  
•       Provide implementation and project tracking assistance for Florida 
Keys GreenSweep, a community/volunteer-based program designed to help 
control invasive exotic species, and restore native species Keys-wide. 
•       Approach and communicate clearly with private landowners to 
motivate them to allow exotic removal on their property.
•       Utilize and train others on use of handheld GPS units and mapping 
software to collect and enter and download accurate information on exotic 
plant infestation and treatment into databases.
•       Supervises no staff, but helps guide efforts of 5-person exotics 
technician team and will frequently lead volunteers in the field.
•       Receives training in plant species identification, herbicide use 
and safety in order to train volunteers. Will be required to obtain 
passing marks on FL commercial herbicide applicator license.
•       Helps maintain tools and equipment.  Must have familiarity with 
the safe operation of electrical and mechanical power tools and must 
follow recommended safety guidelines and precautions specified for said 
work.  
•       May assist on prescribed burns, once required certifications have 
been acquired.
•       May conduct underwater surveys via SCUBA in various weather and 
sea conditions and water depths, identifying marine flora and fauna found 
in the Florida reef tract and adjacent soft- and hard-bottom communities. 
Open Water SCUBA certification required or willingness to obtain 
certification. Ability to SCUBA dive to a depth of 50 feet.  Experience 
working with SCUBA preferred.  
•       Ability to work a flexible work schedule, occasionally some 
evenings and weekends on short notice. 
•       Must have a valid drivers license and safe driving record
•       Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
•       High school diploma and 1-2 years training in science-related 
field or related experience in land management.  
•       Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.  Ability 
to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve 
management activities. 
•       Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and 
efficient manner (lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, etc)
•       Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
•       Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse 
conditions or in inclement weather
•       Optional:  Obtain related licenses or certifications such as first 
aid, CPR, herbicide application, driver’s license. 
•       Optional:  PC familiarity, including database knowledge, in order 
to maintain preserve records.
