Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites nominations and 
applications for the position of Dean for the College of Science (COS).  
The Dean is the chief administrative officer for the College and reports 
to the Provost and Vice Chancellor.  

Founded in 1869, Southern Illinois Normal first opened its doors in 1874 
as a college for teachers.  In 1947, the name was changed to Southern 
Illinois University, reflecting the expanding academic mission of the 
institution.  Today, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) has an 
enrollment of 21,400 students and is categorized as a Carnegie 
Doctoral/Research Extensive University.  SIUC offers undergraduate and 
graduate degrees in eight colleges, a School of Medicine, a School of Law, 
and off-campus degree programs in multiple areas of the state, as well as 
at 33 military bases in 18 states.  Southern at 150: Building Excellence 
Through Commitment is designed to position SIUC among the top 75 public 
research universities in the United States by 2019.

Carbondale, a university-centered community with a population of 25,600, 
is located approximately 100 miles southeast of St. Louis in the scenic 
Shawnee National Forest region of southern Illinois with varied 
recreational opportunities.  It also provides a wide range of cultural and 
social activities associated with a major university.  

The College of Science offers research and graduate programs through the 
doctorate, as well as accredited undergraduate programs in Biological 
Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geology, 
Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Physiology, Plant Biology, and 
Zoology.  The College has over 110 full-time faculty members, and 
approximately 1145 undergraduate, 260 masters, and 150 doctoral students.  
The College has strong associations with the University’s McNair Scholar 
Program; Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs in Environmental Resources 
and Policy and in Molecular Biology, Microbiology & Biochemistry; and 
various Research Centers for Coal, Ecology, Electron Microscopy, Fisheries 
and Aquaculture, Materials Technology, Systematic Biology, and Wildlife.

The successful candidate must possess distinguished academic credentials 
and stature appropriate for appointment to the rank of full Professor with 
tenure in a department in the College; recognized excellence in scholarly 
research and professional achievement; an extensive record of success in 
securing external funding; proven leadership ability, administrative and 
budgetary experience; and experience in planning, personnel, student 
matters, program reviews and/or specialized accreditations.  Candidates 
must also demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; the 
ability to articulate effectively the College’s mission to students, 
faculty, alumni, external funding agencies, and other decision-making 
bodies; the ability to develop and sustain productive relationships with 
on- and off-campus constituencies, funding sources, and fundraising 
sources on behalf of the College; a commitment to academic innovation and 
inter-disciplinary program development; an understanding of and support 
for the diverse multi-disciplinary research, curricula, and public service 
activities of the College; a commitment to high standards in undergraduate 
and graduate education, cultural diversity, and equal opportunity; and a 
commitment to the educational, intellectual, and creative needs and 
achievements of faculty, staff, and students.

The position is available January 1, 2007.  Application review begins
