We've used rebar stakes and they have lasted over 20 years with no end in sight. Painting them helps for a shorter amount of time.
However, in another location, a colleague fell on a rebar stake and hurt herself pretty badly. So we now bend the ends over like a candy cane. They are a little harder to drive into the ground, but they are safer.
