This message is to encourage abstract submissions for the following session at the Fall AGU Meeting (Dec. 11-15, San Francisco). Abstract submission deadline is Thursday, September 7, 2006. Please contact the conveners if you have any questions.
Session Title: Novel Applications of Optical Technology in Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecosystems (B06 - Biogeosciences) Invited Speakers: Brian Bergamaschi, USGS Paula Coble, U. of South Florida Diane McKnight, U. of Colorado - Boulder Darren Reynolds, U. of the West of England Description: The use of optical data for understanding organic matter dynamics has received considerable attention in recent years, but new applications of UV absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy for describing ecosystem processes continue to emerge. Improvements in analysis and data interpretation, combined with relatively low costs and the ability to deploy instrumentation in situ, make optical measurements a powerful tool for understanding aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. For this session, we solicit presentations on the use of laboratory, in situ and remotely-sensed spectrophotometric data to shed light on ecosystem processes in a range of environments and at a variety of scales. Studies utilizing optical data to better understand organic matter sources and transformations, the transport of mercury and other metals, and paleoclimate studies are particularly encouraged. Studies addressing the use of optical data as a management tool for sourcing wastewater and other contaminants are also welcomed, along with new applications of optical data for measuring dissolved ions such as nitrate.
