Could you please post this on the ecolog-l? Sorry for cross-posting.

Dear Colleagues,

=20

Ants are important components of most soil invertebrate communities. =20

Besides their large contribution to biodiversity, they are considered =20

ecosystem engineers that alter the flow of water, energy and nutrients =20

through terrestrial ecosystems. However, despite the importance of =20

these insects for terrestrial ecosystems, relatively little is known =20

on how they influence soil hydrological, chemical and biological =20

processes. We have organized a session at the European Geophysical =20

Union Meeting in Vienna, Austria, at which we will review the status =20

of soil/ant relationships and present case-studies on the impact of =20

both mineral

and organic mound-building ants on soil processes.

=20

We invite contributions (oral and posters) on any of these soil-ant =20

topics. If enough interest is shown, we would like to have selected =20

papers published as a special issue in a soil, ecology, or a =20

entomological journal.
