Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Faculty for Forest Sciences PROFESSOR in Fish and Wildlife Tourism The goal of SLU (the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences) is to develop our understanding and sustainable use of biological natural resources. This is achieved through research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment and information extension. The Faculty of Forest Sciences is one of four faculties of SLU. The faculty is the principal Swedish actor in research and higher education regarding forests, forestry and the forestry-wood chain. It has the responsibility for environmental monitoring and inventory of forests, hence the faculty combines functions of a university and a research institute. The main campus is Umeå, but the faculty has departments also in Uppsala, Alnarp and Skinnskatteberg. The faculty has eight experimental forests throughout the country with long-term experiments and studies of stands, vegetation, soil conditions, water and climate. The faculty has 360 faculty members among them 50 professors in 10 departments and units. Research within fish and wildlife ecology as well as management of fish- wildlife has a long tradition in Sweden. SLU has a major commitment to develop scientifically-based principles for sustainable management of fish and game resources. The recreational and social values of forests and forest landscapes needs to be developed more in Sweden. Within this field of research is recreational fishing and hunting emerging areas. SLU has, via a donation from Sveaskog (a state owned forest company) got the opportunity to increase its scientific endeavors within Fish- and Wildlife Tourism. The recreational and social values including fish and wildlife tourism is internationally a rapidly growing field of interdisciplinary science. SLU aims at developing fish and wildlife tourism from both biological and social scientific perspectives, including development of truly interdisciplinary research. We therefore seek applications from candidates experienced in disciplinary and interdisciplinary networks and research. The research problems within this area cover questions concerning users (e.g. preferences, attitudes, and behaviour), the resources (e.g. population dynamics, management theories, harvest theory) as well as the entrepreneurial side (e.g. business administration, incitement structures). Specifically, the aim of SLU is to develop a scientific base for a sustainable and economically viable fish and wild-life tourism in Sweden. Active cooperation with stakeholders in Swedish society is important for the effective transfer of knowledge. A professor is expected to actively take part in supervising PhD- and Master students. The professor is placed within the Faculty of Forest Sciences in a new unit (previously separate institutions, the Department of Animal Ecology and the Department of Aquaculture). The scientific staff within this unit consists of 5 professors, 3 associate professors, 16 researchers and lecturers and 23 PhD students. This unit is the centre for fish and wildlife research in Sweden. However, there are currently no professors in fish and wildlife tourism. Good co-operation within SLU and with other universities in Sweden and abroad and good contacts with scientific disciplines outside natural science exist at the campus in Umeå. Duties: The professor is expected to develop a new research program of international standing in one (or several) of the central areas of fish and wildlife tourism. In addition she/he will be expected to supervise Master/PhD-students and contribute to the education of undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as develop new courses in his/her fields of expertise. Eligibility: A person shall be eligible for appointment to position as professor if she/he has demonstrated scientific and teaching proficiency. Equal effort shall be devoted to determining the applicants teaching proficiency as well as his/hers scientific proficiency. Assessment criteria when appointing a professor is the extent of scientific and pedagogical skills of the candidate relevant to the subject content of the appointment and to the assignments of the appointment. In addition, the degree of administrative and other skills of importance to the subject contents for the appointment and the duties included in the appointment shall also be taken into account. In addition, the degree of skill in facilitation and the ability to collaborate with the outside community and convey information on research and development work shall also be taken into account. Of these considerations special attention will be given to the applicants scientific and pedagogical skills. The scientific and pedagogical documentation submitted in support of the application shall be indicated in the application, and one copy of each document shall be made available to the Registrar at the time of application. At most 10 scientific publications and 10 pedagogical publications, including popular versions should be submitted in support of the application. In addition, a complete list of publications shall be supplied; the publications submitted with the application must be indicated. After three expert reviewers have been appointed, the applicants(s) will be informed and asked to send copies of the documentation listed in the application to each of the reviewers.
