Graduate student opportunities in biogeochemistry and insect outbreaks
at the University of Idaho. Two graduate research assistantships are
available for M.S. candidates. 1) Watershed-scale carbon and water
cycling: The student will participate in a recently funded
interdisciplinary research project designed improve our understanding of
coupled carbon and water fluxes in the mountainous terrain of northern
Idaho. The project will analyze simulation model results to assess
interactions with climate variability and change and land-use/land-cover
change. 2) Bark beetle outbreak dynamics: Research topics include
spatiotemporal analyses of outbreaks, assessment of outbreak dynamics
using remote sensing imagery, investigation of stand and climate
controls, and/or quantification of effects on forest ecosystems and
biogeochemical fluxes. Ideal candidates will have backgrounds in
ecology, entomology, geography, biogeosciences, hydrology, or a related
field (depending on assistantship of interest). Graduate students will
have the opportunity to receive degrees in either Geography or
Environmental Science. The positions provide full support at $23,000
annually plus health insurance, tuition, and fees. Funding is currently
available and runs through May 2008, with additional funding possible.
Interested applicants should send a cover letter, CV, GPA, GRE scores,
and a personal statement that describes the candidate’s interest in the
position and relevant education and experience to Dr. Jeffrey Hicke
([EMAIL PROTECTED]). Informal inquiries via email or phone
(208-885-6240) are encouraged.
