In response to Toshihide's remark on who would take a temporary position of
a person on maternity leave. What if an academic wants to go on sabbatical,
who takes their place temporarily? This seems to me a common place. At a
western university, an Ecology Department faculty member went on sabbatical,
and guess what, 3 weeks after I gave birth, I was teaching his classes for
two semsters! So a woman who has a newborn filled the spot of a faculty
member on leave for professionals reasons. It's not always as clear cut as
it may appear to be. Yes, I was desperate, and it did little for my career.
I am still in temporary jobs trying to find permenant work in academia. The
part on my resume where I entered the 'Full Time Parent' postion actually
helped me get my current post-doc with a very understanding supervisor. Just
wish there were more out there like him.
