Hi Ecologgers,=20

This is indeed a very interesting debate. As an employer, I have lost
three staff over the last year to parental leave but our system allows
us to very easily replace that person by offering parental leave
replacement contracts. These are not so good for the person who receives
one, but a lot of the time the replacement staff are young people trying
to get into the industry, or people who are wanting to dip their toes in
the work water again after extended absences.=20

Our uni does take family very seriously, although perhaps not to the
extent of providing free childcare. They offer 6mths leave at full pay
or 12mths at half pay with guaranteed right of return to the job, plus
up to 2 years of graduated return to work following the leave. Paternity
leave is still seriously lagging behind, but there has recently been a
breakthrough with couples who both work at the Uni being able to share
the 12mths leave. For female staff who have not yet completed their
PhDs, there are scholarships available to pay their salaries while they
complete their research. As a result, we manage to hold onto our staff,
and they return to us after leave.=20
