Tenure-Track Positions in GIScience (Assistant Professor) and Human Geography (Open Rank)
MARYLAND, BALTIMORE 21250. University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The Department of Geography and Environmental Systems at UMBC invites applications for two positions to begin August 2007. Ph.D in Geography or closely related field is required and candidates are expected to have an active program of research and publication, ability to attract external funding, and evidence of commitment to excellence in teaching. Position 1: (Assistant Professor) GIScience with research and teaching interests in geovisualization, geocomputation, geoinformatics or remote sensing. Teaching responsibilities include introductory and advanced GIS along with courses in area of specialization. The ability to teach remote sensing is desirable. Position 2: (Open Rank) Human Geographer with research and teaching interests in environmental health and hazards, geography of disease and health, or political ecology. Experience with GIS is desirable. Teaching responsibilities include introductory human geography and courses in area of specialization. The successful candidate at the Assistant Professor rank must demonstrate potential for attracting outside funding and mentoring undergraduate and graduate-level research. Successful candidates at the Associate or Full Professor rank must demonstrate a proven record of excellence and on-going achievements in these areas. In the most recent Carnegie ranking, UMBC is listed as a Research University-High Research Activity. Research opportunities at UMBC include collaboration with the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES), an NSF-funded Urban Long-Term Ecological Research site; the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET), a research consortium formed by UMBC and NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center; the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (CUERE), an EPA funded center focusing on the impacts of landscape transformation associated with urban and suburban development, and beginning in 2007, the U.S. Geological Survey Water Science Center for the MD-DE-DC region, which will be moving to the campus Research Park with a staff of 60+ personnel. In addition UMBC is a partner in the Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU), part of a national CESU network. The campus also is home to the Erickson School of Aging Studies, the Center for Health Program Development and Management (CHPDM), and the Laboratory for Healthcare Informatics. UMBC is located in close proximity to Washington D.C. and a broad array of federal, state, and local agencies as well as to other research institutions along the Washington-Baltimore-Philadelphia corridor. The Washington-Baltimore region has an extraordinary number of agencies and institutions whose focus is medicine and public health, both in national as well as international contexts.
