Dear All, The only order that makes sense is the order of how much work each person did. First author for the author that did the most, second for the one who did second most, etc. I know some professors who run big labs like to have their names last. In my experience, they are last because they did the least amount of work with their students or post docs doing most and their names getting stuck on the end just becuase they run the lab. That is the way it should be. I would never put my name last out of three authors (or 20 for that matter) just because I run the lab. My name would go last if I did the least amount of work.
