A few thoughts:

First, I keep hearing this or that alternative energy source won't work,
because it can't provide enough energy to replace fossil fuel. One energy
source doesn't have to replace fossil fuel, it only has to increase energy
output. Get enough different sources, combined with increased conservation
efforts and the need for future fossil fuel use will shrink dramatically.

Second, we should be thinking about true energy independence, which is every
free standing house and building in the country should have a goal of
independence from the energy grid using whatever tools are necessary (we
will need to maintain the grid for industry and energy redistribution).
There was talk about building more nuclear power plants. How many houses
could construct a PV solar unit, geothermal unit, wind unit and/or who
knows what other future technologies that could be developed in the future
for the cost of one nuclear plant.

Third, pardon my ignorance, but what about fission? If the technological
problems of sustainability can be solved, are there other problems (possibly
environmental) that prevents fission from being a good future source for
unlimited power?
