ANNOUNCEMENT:=0A =0ALong Island Central Pine Barrens=0AInvasive Plant Inven= tory and Assessment Project =0ATEMPORARY SEASONAL FIELD BIOLOGICAL TECHNICI= AN POSITIONS=0AThe Central Pine Barrens Commission in cooperation with The = Nature Conservancy, Long Island Invasive Species Management Area, and other= partner agencies is seeking two candidates to assist in continuing an Inva= sive Plant Inventory and Assessment of protected public lands in the Centra= l Pine Barrens area for a three-month period beginning May or June 2007.=0A= Duties:=0ASurvey and map occurrences of invasive terrestrial and aquatic pl= ant species primarily in protected areas in the Central Pine Barrens Core P= reservation Area. The areas to be surveyed are those that are most likely t= o be in a relatively weed-free condition that may be best suited for preven= tion, early detection, and rapid control measures. Identify invasive plant = threats to protected lands, including threats from roadside invasives. Pro= duce maps of terrestrial and aquatic invasive plant occurrences found. Inv= asive plant data will be collected using global positioning system (GPS) te= chnology and organized in a relational database known as the Weed Informati= on Management System (=93WIMS=94), which can be readily used in a geographi= c information system. Prepare a final report analyzing and summarizing the = data collected. =0ARequirements: =0ABachelor of Science degree in= natural science/forestry or equivalent experience; good plant identificati= on skills/coursework in botany or plant taxonomy; experience with computers= including MS Office Suite, and ESRI Arc View or ArcGIS, orienteering and u= se of maps and aerial photos; excellent organizational skills; strong writt= en and oral communication skills; ability to work well independently as wel= l as part of a team and remain reliable; excellent interpersonal skills/goo= d public relation skills; hard-working, and safety conscious; valid driver= =92s license; reliable personal transportation (mileage reimbursement provi= ded); willingness to work occasional weekends (and evenings); field experi= ence; good physical condition; ability to carry up to 25 lbs for up to 8 mi= les in harsh outdoor conditions such as heat, cold and rain; no debilitatin= g reaction to insect bites or poison ivy; sense of adventure.=0APreferred:= =0AExperience with GPS; Field experience in botany or plant taxonomy; Exper= ience with MS Access.=0A =0A =0A =0ASpecial notes:=0AThe successful candida= tes will be employed by the Central Pine Barrens Commission through the Suf= folk County Water Authority. The Nature Conservancy will provide assistance= with training, supervision of fieldwork, and housing. This position involv= es long hours in the field with possible long distance travel. Mosquitoes a= nd ticks will be present during the monitoring season. Mosquito species inc= lude Culex pipians, carrier of the West Nile virus, however cases of West N= ile are rare. Ticks species include the Deer, Dog, and Lone star. Deer tick= s carry Lyme disease; Dog and Lone star ticks carry more benign illnesses s= uch as Babisiosis, Ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Trainin= g and protective clothing will be available to lower the possibility of ins= ect-borne illness.
