This seems to me to be a critical insight:

Everbody talks/writes about soil erosion (by wind and
water). But I've been wondering for a while just how
much soil organic matter is lost to the acceleration
of microbial decomposition of organic soils caused by
the intense tilling and watering cycles of modern
mechanized agriculture. I never see this mentioned,
except from sources related to no-till farming and permaculture.
