Hi, all-
A colleague recently asked me if I had a good reference that addressed the
appropriateness of various abundance measures, i.e., frequency, cover,
etc., in calculating indices. She has specifically been calculating
species diversity, but I had to ask the question what else was she getting
at, and what were the specific questions she was trying to ask from the
data. Species richness just wants presence/absence but whether to use
relative frequency, frequency, relative cover, cover, etc., I don't know
when one is more appropriate than another. Is there a good reference, or
do some of you have a good set of rule-of-thumb guidelines that would be
helpful? (while I think there may be others on the list helped by this,
feel free to respond off list)
Thanks-
david
