Look into the Student Conservation Corps or SCA. They have a variety of summer positions available throughout the country that will give you great hands-on experience and in some cases a stipend and/or education award. Here is the website: http://www.thesca.org/
As a bio/env student, I spent a year in Lava Beds National Monument in Northern California as an SCA and had the best time of my life while gaining some of the most valuable field research experiences. I highly recommend this experience to all students in the ecology/environmental field!
