I am working on protection of my local river, the Big Wood River, in central Idaho. I am looking for published scientific articles that support the protection of natural flooding regimes and document the negative effects of fill in floodplains in terms of hydrology, increased flood velocities, impacts to water quality, natural flooding processes, etc. I have been asked to provide information for the public record at a local government meeting and I hope to provide a science-based perspective that local government can draw upon when approving or denying stream alteration permits that include filling the floodplain.
