Dmitry, I agree, that's an excellent letter. People I know sometimes ask me about global warming. I'm a scientist, so I must be an expert, right? I'm very careful what I say - what do I know about climate science? Only what I read in my spare time. Let's face it, most of us on this list aren't "experts" in global warming, and it is our trust in the scientific process, not expert knowledge, that tends to make us believers.
On a different note, the lesson to learn from the scientist who was misquoted seems to be: don't talk to the media unless they give you, in writing, the right of approval or rejection of what they do with your words. Of course, they probably won't do that...
