I was wondering if anyone is doing or knows of research that has been done on the energy costs associated with pigment production in animals. I'm particularly thinking in relation to mammals typically producing white hairs ventrally and darker hairs dorsally (especially when not associated with countershading). If anyone knows of any relevant research they could pass along that would be great. Thanks.
