ISLE ROYALE BOTANY WORKSHOP THIS JUNE! Experience a week
on Lake Superior's Isle Royale National Park and learn to identify the
diverse plants that live on this incredible island!

This special Botany Workshop, sponsored by the Isle Royale Natural History
Association, and taught by botanist Janet Marr, is open to anyone (please
see * below) with beginning/intermediate knowledge of plant
identification and who is interested in learning to identify the early
summer native flora of this species-rich Lake Superior island. Workshop
participants should be able to hike up to 7 miles in one day with a daypack.

Workshop attendees will meet in Houghton, MI, for a preliminary meeting
on Monday, 18 June, and travel from Houghton to Rock Harbor on the
Ranger III on Tuesday, 19 June (please see ** below for travel from
Grand Portage, Minnesota). The group will spend four days on the island
learning native plant species, using such tools as a dichotomous key and
hand lens to identify plants. Other topics will include discussion of
island plant communities, rare species, ecology, and invasive species.
Participants will return to Houghton on the Ranger III on Saturday,
23 June**.

Workshop activities will take place primarily outdoors during daytime
hours with some inside work. Optional evening sessions will also be
offered to review plants learned earlier. Field trips will include Tobin
Harbor, Scoville Point, Raspberry Island, and Hidden Lake, places that are
all located in the vicinity of Rock Harbor.

Janet Marr, the workshop instructor, is a botanist who has been
involved in many botanical studies over the course of 30 years
throughout Michigan's Upper Peninsula including Isle Royale. She is
co-author of IRNHA's upcoming Isle Royale Nature Guide. Her
botany workshops for the Gratiot Lake Conservancy in Michigan's
Keweenaw Peninsula filled up quickly, so be sure to sign up early for
this Isle Royale workshop. The workshop is limited to 12 participants
and advance enrollment by 4 June is required.

Participants may camp for free at a Rock Harbor group site for the four
nights on the island. They can also stay in the Rock Harbor Lodge or
Housekeeping units at their own expense.

Total cost for the workshop is US $500 per person and includes instruction,
camping, and transportation to and from the island on the Ranger III.
