This introductory-level workshop will provide biologists with the basics in=
estimating density of a population using distance sampling theory. We wi=
ll also introduce program DISTANCE. Participants will be exposed to the ph=
ilosophy behind density estimation from distance sampling data. Studies usi=
ng line transects, point transects, trapping webs, and trapping lines will =
be described. Participants should be proficient with the Windows computer i=
nterface and have a working knowledge of basic statistics. The workshop for=
mat will include a combination of lectures and hands-on computer lab exerci=
ses. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own data for analysis to the w=
orkshop, but should recognize that a thorough analysis will not be complete=
d in the time available. Contact the instructors for details regarding th=
