The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation has a new position open. 

JOB TITLE: Conservation Associate

BACKGROUND: The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to protecting the diversity of life through the
conservation of invertebrates. We educate the public and decision makers
about the importance of invertebrates and work to protect habitat for these
critical animals. For three decades, the Society has been at the forefront
of invertebrate conservation, harnessing the knowledge of highly regarded
scientists and the enthusiasm of citizens to implement conservation and
education programs in the United States. Located in Portland, Oregon the
Society has a national and international presence. Currently the Society has
8 FTE with an annual budget of over $500,000.

SCOPE: Under the direction of the Executive Director the Conservation
Associate will work on a variety of conservation projects related to aquatic
invertebrate monitoring, pollinator conservation, endangered species
conservation, and other conservation issues that arise.

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES: The Conservation Associate will work on a variety of
projects related to aquatic invertebrate monitoring and habitat conservation
for pollinators and endangered species. Projects may include organizing
and/or conducting workshops, writing educational materials, conducting field
or literature research, among other responsibilities as they arise. Strong
outreach skills are a plus as the ideal candidate will coordinate logistics
for workshops and provide training to a variety of agency staff, volunteers,
farmers and other land managers. The Conservation Associate should be able
to design and implement ecological field experiments.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

    * Bachelors degree (Graduate degree strongly preferred) in entomology,
ecology, conservation biology, natural resource management, or 3-5 years
experience in conservation science, and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience; experience in entomology is preferred.
    * Ability to manage complex or multiple projects.
    * Knowledge of species (especially invertebrates), natural communities,
ecosystems, ecological processes, and their conservation needs. 
    * Ability to analyze and interpret scientific data and prepare reports
of findings.
    * Ability to synthesize, interpret, and communicate complex scientific
information to influence conservation practice.
    * Ability to manage time and diverse activities under deadlines, while
delivering quality results.
    * Ability to work independently on assigned tasks.
    * Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g. Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Web browsers).
    * Ability to make queries and understand data stored in ArcView and
Access databases.
    * Ability to create simple web pages using software such as Dreamweaver.

The ideal candidate will also demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:

PROBLEM SOLVING:

    * Ability to develop creative ideas to improve conservation strategies.
    * Ability to anticipate, analyze, diagnose, and solve complex ecological
problems.
    * Ability to compile and organize scientific data with attention to detail.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:

    * Designs and implements experiments relative to program area.
    * Applicant may manage a grant or contract or write a request for proposal.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

    * Ability to communicate professionally with a wide variety of people to
develop, negotiate and/or implement conservation projects.
    * Ability to work cooperatively with a number of staff and external
parties, sometimes under pressure, in order to complete project work and
goals in a timely manner.
    * Ability to simplify and explain complex scientific data to general
audiences.

KNOWLEDGE OF ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS:

    * A basic understanding of pollination ecology and the role of native
pollinators in agroecosystems.
    * Knowledge of aquatic invertebrates, and stream and wetland ecosystems.
    * Experience with ecological field experiments.

 WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Travel will be required for up to 25% of scheduled hours. The Conservation
Associate may have to work in variable weather conditions, at remote
locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically
demanding circumstances. 

TERMS: This is a full time position and we are an at will employer. The

SALARY: $27,000 - $32,000 depending on experience.

BENEFITS: This position includes a generous benefits package: eleven paid
holidays and two weeks of vacation accrued after first year; eight percent
of base pay toward a SEP retirement account, beginning in January of the
calendar year following the first full year of employment; eight percent
additional salary toward health coverage; and a flexible work environment.
