An extra day? Does Tim have any idea how long it takes to get by train from Halifax to Montreal or Toronto, to say nothing of Vancouver? As for going from Los Angeles to Paris!
Even within Europe it can take a long time to get places by train, and until the prices are rationalised it is often not feasible. A few years ago I went to a meeting in Plymouth with three Portuguese colleagues. We flew to London (rather than make the two-day train trip) but planned to take the train from London to Plymouth and back. It proved considerably cheaper to rent a car for a week than to buy four BritRail round trip tickets.
