When I started ECOLOG-L 15 years ago most subscribers were using
dial-up access to the Internet. To prevent messages from the list
from overwhelming this relatively slow technology. I configured it
to refuse anything but plain ASCII text (i.e., no HTML code, no
attached files). Many (perhaps most?) subscribers now have faster
access, and some schools (e.g., University of MD and Florida State
this summer) have discontinued their dial-up Internet access. I'm
considering changing the list configuration now to permit some
attachments or HTML coding. For example, some job descriptions have
been sent to the list as PDF files, and the ESA office sometimes send
HTML-coded announcements. If you have strong feelings about making a
change away from plain ASCII text, please let me know.

Thanks to the University of Maryland for hosting ECOLOG-L. ESANEWS,
and ESASTUDENTS on behalf of the Ecological Society of America.
