Assistant Professorships
Department of Biology

The Biology Department at Western Washington University invites applications
for three tenure track, assistant professor positions in Eukaryotic Cellular
Molecular Biology, Ecological Genetics, and Neurobiology, beginning
September 2008.  We seek individuals who are committed to undergraduate and
masters’ student education and who will establish vigorous research programs
that involve students. 

1.  Eukaryotic Cellular Molecular Biologist
Assistant Professor, Biology

Responsibilities:
•       Teach Biol 205 (Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Biology)
•       Teach Biol 321 (Genetics) or Biol 323 (Cell and Molecular Biology)
•       Teach Biol 324 (Methods in Molecular Biology)
•       Contribute to the Cell Emphasis and the interdisciplinary Cell and
Molecular Biology/Biochemistry curriculum at the 400-level, including a
specialty course in area of expertise 
•       Maintain an active program in biological research in cell and molecular
biology involving undergraduate students and seek extramural funding 

Required Qualifications:
•       Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience in eukaryotic cell and molecular 
biology
•       Evidence of the potential to teach Biol 205
•       Evidence of the potential to teach Biol 321 or Biol 323
•       Evidence of the potential to teach Biol 324
•       Evidence of the potential to teach advanced courses in cell and 
molecular
biology
•       Evidence of effective scholarship
•       Evidence of the potential to establish a research program in cell and
molecular biology that includes mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate
(Masters) students in research

Preferred Qualifications:
•       We are interested in applicants with expertise in eukaryotic systems at
the cellular level that use molecular and/or genetic methods to address
fundamental research questions.

Desired Qualifications:
•       Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student body

2.  Ecological Geneticist
Assistant Professor, Biology. 
Responsibilities:
•       Teach Biol 204 (Introduction to Ecology, Evolution, and Biodiversity) 
•       Teach Biol 321, our core course in genetics
•       Teach Biol 432, our core course in evolutionary biology
•       Contribute to the Ecology, Evolutionary, and Organismal (EEO) Biology
curriculum at the 400-level, including a specialty course in area of expertise
•       Maintain an active program in biological research and seek extramural 
funding 

Required Qualifications:
•       Ph.D. in genetics, ecology, or evolutionary biology
•       Postdoctoral experience 
•       Experience in ecological genetics, preferably at the both the graduate 
and
postgraduate level
•       Evidence of the potential to teach our core genetics course (Biol 321) 
and
our core evolutionary biology course (Biol 432) 
•       Evidence of the potential to contribute to the 400-level EEO curriculum 
•       Evidence of effective scholarship
•       Evidence of the potential to establish a vigorous research program in
ecological genetics that includes mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate
(Masters’) students in research

Preferred Qualifications:
•       We are particularly interested in broadly trained applicants with
expertise in quantitative genetics and/or genomics and with strong
statistical skills.
•       Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to
excellence in undergraduate education.

3.  Neurobiologist
Assistant Professor, Biology

Responsibilities:
•       Teach animal physiology section of Biol 206 (Introduction to Organismal
Biology)
•       Teach Biol 323 (Cell and Molecular Biology) or Biol 321 (Genetics)
•       Contribute to the Behavioral Neurosciences curriculum, including a
400-level specialty course in area of expertise
•       Maintain an active program in biological research involving 
undergraduate
and graduate students and seek extramural funding. 

Required Qualifications:
•       Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience in neurobiology
•       Evidence of the potential to teach the animal physiology section of  
Biol 206
•       Evidence of the potential to teach Biol 321 or 323
•       Evidence of the potential to teach advanced courses in neurobiology 
•       Evidence of effective scholarship
•       Evidence of the potential to establish a research program that includes
mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate (Masters’) students in research

Desired Qualifications:
•       Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student body

Additional Information:
This position and two additional ones in the Psychology Department are part
of a state-funded initiative to enhance a new Behavioral Neurosciences
program at WWU.  The Psychology Department is seeking new faculty members
with expertise in molecular neuroscience or systems neuroanatomy, who are
working in areas of behavioral neuroscience that include perception,
attention, learning and memory, and executive function.  For further
