Has there been any research on the effect of permanently removing
large amounts of water from the hydrological cycle?

In north Texas, natural gas drilling in the Barnett Shale will
potentially
contaminate more than 340,000 acre feet (111 Billion gallons) of water
which will be pumped deep into disposal injection wells.

The calculation is based on 10,570 existing and permitted wells
multiplied by 3.5 million gallons of water for each well fracture,
with two additional 're-fracs' per well. (10.5 million gallons per
well total).
