Hi Megan,

You can place seed(s) in mesh bags (mesh size determined by seed size).
Simply cut small pieces and fold and secure edges to make small packets.
These can then be placed in hardware cloth enclosure underground to reduce
mammalian seed predation and aid in recovering all seeds. Ensure that the
mesh will not degrade before you dig them up. Bridal veil has worked for me
but under extreme wetness you may want to choose otherwise.

Good luck!

Scott

Subject: Field germination trials

I need ideas about how to plant seeds into a natural setting to estimate
natural germination rates. The seeds have to be planted individually and
must stay in the same position through the winter and into the spring. They
will be planted in the South East where we (usually) get substantial rain
throughout the year. I would be grateful for any ideas about how to keep the
seeds stationary throughout the winter.

Thanks,

Megan Van Etten
