Early-Career Polar Researchers: Become Part of the International Polar Year (IPY) Legacy http://www.disccrs.org/ngpr/ IPY NGPR Symposium May 4 - 11, 2008 La Foret Conference Center Colorado Springs, CO Application Deadline: October 15, 2007 http://www.disccrs.org/ngpr/apply.html IPY NGPR SYMPOSIUM OVERVIEW: The IPY 2007-2009 is a unique opportunity to blaze a new trail for =20 polar research, one that will include pathways across the natural and =20= social sciences to benefit the scientific research enterprise and =20 society. The symposium will bring together 36 advanced graduate =20 students and recent Ph.D. graduates conducting independent research =20 during the 2007=962009 IPY. Scholars will present and discuss their =20 research to increase awareness of work conducted by their peers =20 during this IPY, establish an interdisciplinary collegial network, =20 and provide a foundation for future collaborations. The symposium represents a unique opportunity to provide a new =20 generation of polar researchers with a common sense of history and =20 purpose. Several internationally recognized polar experts, including =20 veteran polar scientists who were actively engaged in the 1957=961958 =20= IGY, will join the new scholars to share perspectives on the history =20 and future of polar research. The setting will provide an open forum =20 for discussions and interactions that should provide a lasting =20 contribution to the IPY Legacy, and lead to new research directions =20 advance science at the intersection of science and society. SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS: Participants will be competitively selected by committee through a =20 rigorous application process with the goal of identifying a diverse =20 group of early career scientists who are likely to become part of the =20= IPY legacy, just as David Keeling and others who were =93early career=94 = =20 during the 1957/58 International Geophysical Year (IGY) went on to =20 make major contributions to our understanding of the Earth system =20 through polar research. ELIGIBILITY: Advanced students and Ph.D. graduates conducting research in the =20 Arctic or Antarctic region during the IPY and who complete their =20 degree between January 1, 2002 - March 31, 2009 are eligible to =20 apply. Applicants must be conducting polar research during the IPY, =20 but they do NOT need to be part of an IPY-approved project. Scholars from the full range of natural and social sciences are =20 eligible. While the focus is on the US system with preference given =20 for American citizens and U.S. residents, a few slots will be =20 reserved for citizens of any country who are residing outside the US =20 and demonstrate interests in working with U.S. researchers. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS http://www.disccrs.org/ngpr/apply.html. For more details contact Susan Weiler ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) or =20 Sheldon Drobot ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). The NGPR is supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation's =20 Office of Polar Programs through grant #ARC-0632324 to Whitman =20 College, C.S. Weiler PI, and #ARC-0632312 to University of Colorado, =20 Sheldon Drobot PI. ******************************* ********** C.
