We have an exciting term job opportunity for an Interdisciplinary Ecologist, GS-0408-09, Geographer GS-0150-09, or=20 Physical Scientist GS-1301-09 at the U.S. Geological Survey's Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center. =20
=20 =20 I am asking for your help in informing potential candidates of the job announcement.=20 Major Duties:=20 The incumbent will be a member of a team at Northern Prairie=20 Wildlife Research Center (NPWRC) studying least tern and piping=20 plover ecology on the Upper Missouri River. The incumbent's primary=20 responsibility will be the inventory and mapping of riverine and=20 riparian habitats on the Upper Missouri River from analysis of=20 QuickBird satellite imagery. The imagery will be analyzed using=20 object-based image segmentation and classification procedures in=20 eCognition software. Objectives of the analysis are to inventory and=20 map riverine and riparian habitats with an emphasis on the=20 characterization of emergent sandbar nesting and foraging habitats=20 for the birds. The work will involve processing and analysis of=20 raster, vector, and tabular databases using image processing,=20 geographic information system, and statistical software packages. The work=20 will be performed using the resources of the NPWRC Spatial Analysis Laboratory,=20 which include eCognition, MicroImage's Map and Image Processing System, ArcGIS,=20 PCI Geomatica, IDRISI Andes, Pathfinder Office, and SAS on Pentium=20 workstations running the Windows XP operating system.=20 Perform statistical analyses of image data to identify the relative=20 importance of features for discriminating and mapping habitat/land=20 cover categories. Perform manual editing of object boundaries and=20 habitat/land cover labels to correct errors which cannot be resolved=20 using digital image processing techniques.=20 Collect data for accuracy assessment of habitat/land cover maps=20 using manual image interpretation procedures. Prepare data for=20 statistical assessment of map accuracy.=20 Construct geospatial data bases and perform vector and raster=20 analyses of habitat/land cover maps to characterize the habitat=20 composition and configuration of emergent sandbars and their=20 temporal dynamics.=20 Prepare technical reports with text, tables, and figures documenting=20 the inventory, mapping, and estimation of habitats on emergent=20 sandbars. Prepare FGDC compliant metadata for land cover=20 classifications and other geospatial data products.=20 Information about application procedures and closing dates for the job=20 announcement can be found at the following web links.=20 Geographer=20 https://jobs1.quickhire.com/scripts/usgs.exe/runjobinfo?aOrg=3D1&aJob=3D1= 219 9&Username=3D~BROWSE~&ORGIMG=3Dusgs.gif <https://jobs1.quickhire.com/scripts/usgs.exe/runjobinfo?aOrg=3D1&aJob=3D= 121 99&Username=3D~BROWSE~&ORGIMG=3Dusgs.gif> =20 Ecologist=20 https://jobs1.quickhire.com/scripts/usgs.exe/runjobinfo?aOrg=3D1&aJob=3D1= 220 0&Username=3D~BROWSE~&ORGIMG=3Dusgs.gif <https://jobs1.quickhire.com/scripts/usgs.exe/runjobinfo?aOrg=3D1&aJob=3D= 122 00&Username=3D~BROWSE~&ORGIMG=3Dusgs.gif> =20 Physical Scientist=20 https://jobs1.quickhire.com/scripts/usgs.exe/runjobinfo?aOrg=3D1&aJob=3D1= 213 9&Username=3D~BROWSE~&ORGIMG=3Dusgs.gif <https://jobs1.quickhire.com/scripts/usgs.exe/runjobinfo?aOrg=3D1&aJob=3D= 121 39&Username=3D~BROWSE~&ORGIMG=3Dusgs.gif> =20 Larry=20 Larry Strong U.S. Geological Survey Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center 8711 37th Street SE Jamestown, ND, USA 58401-9736 (701) 253-5524 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
