Assistant Professor, Plant Evolutionary Genomics

Position:
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the
University of Illinois at
Urbana- Champaign is seeking qualified candidates for a regular full-time,
tenure-track faculty
member to conduct research and teaching in the area of plant evolutionary
genomics. This is a 9-
month faculty appointment at the rank of assistant professor, with a 70%
research / 30% teaching
split. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a world-class
institution with quality
academic units including a center of excellence in biotechnology and a national
supercomputing
center. The successful candidate will be provided with excellent laboratory
facilities, and
substantial start-up funds.
NRES has 39 tenure-track faculty with expertise in teaching, research, and
outreach in the
biological, physical, and social sciences applied across natural, forested,
agricultural, and urban
ecosystems (www.nres.uiuc.edu). Interdisciplinary and systems-based approaches
are important
elements of our research and education programs. NRES has programs in
horticulture, forestry,
soil and water, human-environment interactions, fish and wildlife, and related
sciences, including
molecular biology, quantitative analysis, plant products, microbiology, and
entomology.
Responsibilities:
This search is part of the campus interdisciplinary initiative in evolutionary
genomics associated
with the Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB). It is expected that the
successful candidate will
develop an internationally recognized research program, direct graduate
students and
postdoctoral fellows, advise and interact with undergraduate students,
contribute to teaching
needs of the department in appropriate areas, compete effectively for private
and public research
funds, and participate in the public service mission of the department.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in genomics/molecular biology/genetics or related field is required.
Postdoctoral or related
experience is extremely beneficial. Applicants should have a multidisciplinary
background and
experience that combines plant evolution and genetics, molecular biology, and
functional
genomics. We are particularly interested in candidates who will apply the
tools of genomics to
study genetic patterns of plant evolution in response to artificial selection
and domestication of
annual and perennial crops. All candidates should have an ability to attract
funding, a vigorous
record of publication, and strong complementarities with existing programs in
NRES and other
units at UIUC.
Starting Date:
August 16, 2008, or when a suitable candidate becomes available after the
closing date.
Salary:
Salary is negotiable and will be commensurate with education and experience.
