Vacancies: 3 technicians and 1 crew leader Duration: May 13 (crew leader) or May 27 (technicians) August 14, 2008 (starting date is firm) Series and Grade: GS-0404-5 (technicians); GS-0404-7 (crew leader) Pay: $14.11 - $18.34/hour technicians and $17.47 22.72/hour crew leader Major Duties: The incumbents will work for the Great Lakes Network of the National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) program. The goals of the I&M program include monitoring key environmental variables (vital signs) so that ecological change can be detected and addressed in a timely manner. The incumbents will assist with sampling for the vegetation vital sign. This is a largely field based position. The incumbents will assist with the establishment of permanent monitoring plots at Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota. Incumbents will collect extensive monitoring data on trees, shrubs, and herbs, collect data on coarse woody debris, identify select insect and disease pathogens and assess tree health. It is essential that the incumbents be able to identify vegetation to the species level. Field work will be performed in teams of 2-3 people. The incumbent will also spend approximately 5-10% of time performing computer work. This position will require frequent travel, including backpacking, canoeing, and extensive camping. Some sites will be accessed via backpack and the incumbent will be expected to carry both camping and field equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
