Field Station Scientist, Tyson Research Center

Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a PhD-level 
scientist to be based at its’ Tyson Research Center 
(http://biology4.wustl.edu/tyson/), a Field Station located ~20 miles west 
of the main campus.  One of the primary responsibilities of this position 
will be to develop an ecological research program within the context of 
large-scale collaborative projects being established at Tyson and 
surrounding natural areas.  Other duties will include: coordinating and 
mentoring undergraduate and high school research interns; co-teaching 
field courses; working with the Director and Associate Director on 
administrative, grant writing, and fund raising activities.   

The minimum qualification for this position is a PhD in ecology, 
environmental science, or a related field, but postdoctoral experience, 
experience with large-scale experimental and observational studies, 
experience supervising and mentoring young scientists, and a proven 
ability to publish and receive grants are favored.  Preference will be 
given to candidates with research interests in terrestrial ecology at the 
population, community, landscape, and/or ecosystem levels.  Research 
interests should be readily addressed using local terrestrial ecosystems 
(Oak-Hickory forest, prairie, glades).  In addition to the ~2000 acre site 
owned by Washington University, research activities are expected to 
include a network nearby natural areas, including the Missouri Botanical 
Garden’s Shaw Nature Reserve (http://www.shawnature.org/), County Parks 
(http://www.co.st-louis.mo.us/parks/), State Parks 
(http://www.mostateparks.com/), and the MO Conservation Areas 
(http://mdc.mo.gov/).    

Although not tenure-track, this is intended to be a long-term position, 
and will contribute to Washington University’s expanding mission towards 
environmental sustainability (www.i-cares.wustl.edu).  This is a 12-month 
position with full benefits, and the starting salary will be commensurate 
with qualifications.  Start date is flexible, but preferably would be 
prior to September, 2008.
