--- PLEASE POST WIDELY ---

The Professorship of Forest Ecology at the Swiss=20
=46ederal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Z=FCrich,=20
Switzerland (http://www.fe.ethz.ch/index_en), is=20
seeking to fill the position of a

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Simulation of Forested Landscapes under Global Change

The position is part of the research cluster=20
"Disturbance dynamics" of the professorship. We=20
use the landscape model LandClim, a derivative of=20
LANDIS, to study vegetation dynamics in mountain=20
landscapes. The position is embedded in the=20
project MOUNTLAND, which deals with analyzing the=20
impacts of Global Change on mountain ecosystem=20
goods and services. An important part of=20
MOUNTLAND is the derivation of adaptation=20
strategies in cooperation with project partners=20
in socio-economy and political science. MOUNTLAND=20
also includes a field-based component (PhD thesis=20
at WSL, Birmensdorf).

We anticipate that the research of the=20
postdoctoral fellow will deal with one or several=20
of the following: (1) effects of drought on plant=20
growth and vegetation patterns, (2) wildfire=20
dynamics, and (3) invasive tree species in=20
mountain landscapes. Collaboration options exist=20
with scientists in the professorship who focus on=20
the modeling of insect infestations, on=20
reconstructing Holocene vegetation patterns in=20
the Mediterranean region, and others.

Suitable candidates hold a PhD degree in ecology,=20
environmental science, geography, forest science=20
or a related field, and have experience in the=20
development and use of dynamic models in the=20
environmental sciences. Good knowledge of C++, C#=20
or Java, or the ability to become familiar with=20
complex C++ code within a very short period is=20
required for this project. Experience in forest=20
or landscape modeling (e.g. gap models, forest=20
growth models, spatially explicit landscape=20
models) would be an asset.

The position is open immediately, and the initial=20
project funding is guaranteed for two years. An=20
extension by another two years is possible. For=20
more information on the position, please contact=20
Prof. Dr. Harald Bugmann (address see below).

Applications should include a CV, a brief=20
statement of research interests and the names and=20
addresses (including e-mail) of three reference=20
persons. Applications must be submitted either on=20
paper via regular mail, or as one single PDF file=20
to

Screening of applications will start on 1=20
=46ebruary 2007, and will continue until the=20
position is filled.
