  .Folks --

Wind energy development is a fact of life in a world of dramatic changes in
energy availability and usage in the New Millenium. Some environmental
advocates, such as Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute, are calling
for the installation of hundreds of thousands, even over 1 Million new wind
turbines worldwide to satisfy human energy needs while reducing greenhous
gas emissions.

Can we have wind energy and conserve bird, bat, and other wildlife
populations simultaneously? Most major ornithological and conservation
organizations believe we can have both, if we use our best science and
adequate monitoring to place wind turbines and wind farms ONLY in
appropriate, relatively safe locations.

Much research is underway and a variety of reports and peer reviewed
publications are available. At the same time, anti-wind activists are
confusing the issue by making statements that confuse the public and even
confuse conservation biologists at time. One ornithologist operates a
listserver which allows much disinformation and even slander of
ornithologists to take place without rebuttal and with no regard at all for
scientific rigor or accuracy.

For this reason, I am starting a new listserver called
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Anyone can visit the home page at:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/WindTurbinesWildlife/

Researchers and conservationists are encouraged to use the listserver as a
resource to gain access to published, peer reviewed scientific information
on issues such as siting wind farms, estimating mortality, determining
effects of scavengers on carcass counts, behaviors of migrating birds as
related to wind farms, how wind turbine noises affect different wildlife,
evolving techniques of remote monitoring of offshore wind turbines on
seabirds, etc.

I have already added many pdf files in a variety of categories to the
listserver webpage for access by members. I encourage others to add similar
files as published or to send them to me to be added to the reference
materials already filed away in listserver archives.

I will be analyzing and countering misinformation by anti-wind activists who
either misunderstand or deliberately mis-state published science in their
"analyses" which consist of faux science, total lack of objectivity, and
misleading pronouncements that even attempt to attack the credibility and
motives of reputable scientists in the U.S. and in Europe and Britain.

Please consider joining and participating in this new listserver if you have
a professional or conservation interest in wind turbines and their impacts
on birds and other wildlife.
