COOPERATIVE WILDLIFE RESEARCH LAB LABORATORY
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY CARBONDALE

Ph.D. GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP
SPATIAL INTERACTIONS BETWEEN SMALL MAMMALS AND THEIR PREY & PARASITES

The Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory, Southern Illinois University at
Carbondale is inviting applications for a PhD-level Graduate Research
Assistantship beginning June 2008. Assistantships are on a 12‑month basis;
stipend is $1354/month ($1435/month after July 1, 2008) plus full tuition
waiver and support for research activities. For more information about our
graduate program, please see the home pages of the Wildlife Lab
(http://www.siu.edu/~wildlife/) and the Zoology Department
(http://www.science.siu.edu/zoology/index.html)

This National Science Foundation-funded project will address how spatial
distribution of the abundance and foraging activity of small mammals modifies
their impact on prey (gypsy moths and songbirds) and parasite (Lyme-disease
carrying ticks) populations in northeastern U.S. forests. The project will
involve substantial field work, particularly measuring mammal activity through
live trapping and footprint tracking, monitoring songbird movements and nest
success, as well as monitoring survival of invertebrate prey. However, this
project can also provide the successful applicants opportunities to learn and
apply mathematical modeling and other quantitative tools.

Degree and Qualifications: Graduate studies will lead to a Ph.D. in Zoology at
Southern Illinois University.  Competitive GPA and GRE scores are required;
combined verbal and quantitative GRE scores must be >1,100 to be considered.
Applicants with backgrounds in wildlife biology, ecology, and/or zoology are
encouraged to apply. Prior field experience and coursework or experience in
mathematics, statistics and computer science are desirable.
