Bill and Forum:

Well, yes, there have been discussions on this list, but they have generally been sowing seeds against the wind. That is, opining goes on, but there has been (as is unfortunately common on the best of listservs) little in the way of real discussion where points are made, responded to, and a resolution reached. But a lot of folks have stuck their necks out on biofuels, and like those heavily invested (in terms of money, professional "standing," "position, and ego) in nuclear energy, diversionary tactics, hardwired into so many species (e.g. the killdeer), are likely to rule--or try to. When even significant numbers of professional ecologists, for example, get sucked in by sucked in singers and actors, sticking to the point is bound to be difficult. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't TRY. And try again. And again, ad infinitum. Evolution, especially of the mind, ain't easy. So sow away; one day it will be sewed up--more or less.

PS: When species and their intra-specific genetic variation, "known" and unknown, is lost (it may be that the latter is all that's necessary in some cases, but how the hell would we know?), "restoration" can't be an option, especially on the soilless substrates of tropical forests. The only option will be to import species from "reference" sites, and settle for that illusion. Just cataloging and classifying is not "knowing" anyway. Ecologists, ARISE!

There have been quite a few past discussion about biofuels on this list, and
the April 14 issue of Time magazine has a cover story with the most dramatic
attack on the biofuel concept that I have yet seen in the mainstream media. I
am posting a link to the full story here, because even though I think
ecologists are well up on the issue, there were certainly facts in this story
that were new to me. I think that this is an issue we should think about and
perhaps act on.

If anyone has trouble accessing the story please let me know and I will forward
it.
