Job Announcement
Job Title: Summer Field Assistant
Job Description: As part of a recent USDA/EPA grant examining the
ecological impacts from the interactions of climate change, land use change
and invasive species, the Silander lab at the University of Connecticut is
seeking to hire a motivated, self-reliant individual to assist in
establishing and monitoring transplant plots related to invasive plant
species distribution in New England. In an effort to evaluate the
performance of invasive species under novel site conditions characteristic
of the regional landscape, we will be establishing transplant plots in
southern Connecticut and northwestern Vermont. This project, associated with
the University of Connecticut's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary
Biology, will involve work in Connecticut as well as in areas of Vermont
(around Burlington). This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in
gaining experience working in invasive species ecology and ecological
research.
Responsibilities: Assist in the establishment and maintenance of transplant
plots including both native species in New England and invasive species.
These plots will be in a wide variety of habitats to assess species response
to novel site condition. This will involve physical work clearing plots,
planting seedlings and potentially constructing fences. Additionally, we
will be collecting, cleaning and storing a selection of native and invasive
seeds for later germination.
Qualifications: B.S. or B.A. degree in Ecology, Botany, Natural Resource
Management, Environmental Science, or a related biological field. Strong
observational, critical thinking and organizational skills with attention to
detail are essential. Applicants that have demonstrated experience with
plants and knowledge of the flora of Northeastern United States will be
given high consideration. Individuals must be able to work both
independently and as a member of a team and be willing to work under adverse
field conditions. A valid driver's license is necessary.
Dates/Hours: This is a full-time, temporary position beginning June1 and
ending in late August. Hours are Monday through Friday, averaging eight
hours per day, although work times may vary depending on weather.
Wages/Benefits: Wages negotiable, but commensurate with experience. Medical
and unemployment insurance, paid holidays, overtime, and paid sick days are
not available. You must provide your own transportation.
Application: Please submit a cover letter, resume, and contact information
for two references via email to:
