Dear colleagues,
    In their classic paper, Hairston et al. (1960) referred to "green plants" 
often.  However, they never actually asked the question "why is the world 
green?" nor made the statement "the world is green (because...)."  Given that 
these are two of the most widely-used statements regarding this article, my 
question is: who was the first one to use either of these phrases to describe 
the HSS hypothesis?
