POSITION DESCRIPTION Title: Carbon Finance Coordinator Supervisor: Director, International Sustainable Conservation Program Location: Washington, DC Date of Posting: April 2008 Deadline for Application: Position will remain open until filled American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is dedicated to conserving wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas by building networks and partnerships designed to address the greatest threats and provide long term protection for birds and their habitats. The Carbon Finance Coordinator will be responsible for developing land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) and avoided deforestation projects applicable to key conservation areas for biodiversity, particularly non-governmental reserves dedicated to the conservation of high priority bird species, as a mean to generate long term financial revenue for conservation. This position is funded by a grant for one year. If additional need is determined for this position and funding becomes available, it may be extended. Primary Duties: * Serve as ABC's point person for carbon finance projects in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), helping create institutional capacity in this field and supporting efforts of ABC's partners in carbon projects; * Prepare organization-wide guidelines for LULUCF and avoided deforestation projects in LAC, including feasibility assessments and 'Project Information Notes', use of eligibility tools and baseline build-up methodologies, understanding of National Communications to the UNFCCC, among other pre-project aspects; * Lead the preparation of 'Project Design Documents' including the selection of baseline methodologies, selection of technical partners or service providers, etc.; * Lead the preparation of 'Emission Reduction Purchase Agreements' and guide negotiations aimed at selling of reductions on behalf of ABC and its partners in LAC; * Communicate as necessary with international partners, multi- and bi-lateral agencies, carbon brokering agents and offsets buyers in developing appropriate carbon finance projects; * Support other bird conservation programs of ABC as directed. Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess the broadest combination of the characteristics list below. * A degree in environmental science, forestry or related field, with a minimum of two years equivalent work experience; * Extensive knowledge of carbon and green house gas issues, including carbon markets and associated international agreements, policy, legal, scientific, and conservation perspectives; * Ability to work on complex conservation and policy issues, as well as in multiparty negotiations, and the ability to communicate these issues in writing; * Ability to work on interdisciplinary teams to build partnerships and promote cooperation among conservation organizations, both public and private; * Commitment to the ABC mission; and an interest in birds and the goals of carbon projects; * Willingness to travel occasionally; * Possess a willingness to consider viewpoints, a professional and courteous demeanor, perseverance, and good sense of humor; * Proficiency in Spanish is a plus (short-listed candidates who have indicated some Spanish proficiency will be partially interviewed in Spanish).
