Dear Micheal, B. alleghaniensis will smell and taste like wintergreen when you scratch its bark whereas B. papyrifera will not. Be careful though because B. lenta will also have this characteristic, but it is easily distinguishable from B. alleghaniensis by sight and it doesn't sound like you have had any problems with B. lenta.
