The Maine Natural Areas Program is a division of the Maine Department of Conservation. MNAP staff conducts ongoing statewide inventories and monitoring efforts to document the location, condition and status of Maine's biota. The program maintains a comprehensive data management system consisting of computer, map and manual files used primarily for planning and protection efforts. Brief Job Description: The Biology Specialist will assist in the flow of data into and out of the manual and computerized components of the Natural Heritage Data management system and the flow of this data and its use among agencies, will assist with information requests, and will assist with environmental review. Primary responsibilities include: 1. Transcribing information describing locations and biological status of rare plants, natural communities, and other features and entering data into computer files; 2. Responding to and interpreting data for program information requests, including various types of environmental review from local, state, and federal agencies and organizations; 3. Providing GIS technical assistance and assisting in disseminating landowner letters; 4. Assisting with the administration of active grants and contracts by maintaining appropriate documentation and verifying financial reports; 5. Supervising interns involved with information management including quality control of all work performed by these interns and assisting with daily office operations and with special projects as needed. Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelors Degree in Biology or related science field and six months of biological related experience. Comparable work experience may be substituted for education requirements on a year-for-year basis. Preference will be given to candidates with strong computer skills and exposure to data management. Experience with Natural Heritage System methodology, topographic maps, and the computer programs ArcGIS, ArcView, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access is desirable. Candidate should have strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, strong communication skills, the ability to set priorities and organize time effectively, the ability to work effectively and accurately under pressure, and a willingness to work in an office environment.
