I am currently looking for a PhD student or post doctoral researcher with experience in trace metal or mercury analytical methods and/or soil chemistry for a project focusing on mercury release from soils with flue gas desulfurization (FGD) solids added as an agricultural amendment. Flue gas desulfurization solids are derived during clean up of sulfur from air being emitted from coal fired utilities during combustion. In the process of sulfur removal Hg also is removed. These solids have the beneficial use of being an agricultural amendment as well as being used for making wall board.
This project will focus on measurement of mercury release to the air and water as well as uptake by plants and earthworms associated with FGD material amended soils. The potential for methyl mercury formation and release will also be investigated. Most of the work for this project will be laboratory based however it also entails a field component. Current funding is for two years. Although I am primarily interested in filling this position at the Post Doctorate level I can also fill at the PhD level. Qualifications Background in soil chemistry or low temperature geochemistry and/or environmental geochemistry as well as skills involving analytical methods for trace metals and/or mercury and methyl mercury analyses. This project is expect to start in November 2008 so interested persons should contact Dr. Gustin ASAP,
