*Greenhouse Manager Position:*
The Department of Biology at Appalachian State University
(http://www.biology.appstate.edu) seeks to hire a Greenhouse Manager to
direct the day-to-day operations of the 3,700 ft^2 Biology Department
Greenhouse Facility apportioned into 2 research houses, a propagation
room, and a large conservatory. Additional facilities include an office,
classroom, storage room and preparation room, as well as an outside
courtyard space for growing plants. This person must have the necessary
botanical and horticultural expertise for growing and maintaining
research plants and a living plant collection.
Responsibilities include 1) daily plant care, including watering,
nutrition and pest control, 2) direct supervision of greenhouse staff
(student employees and volunteer workers), 3) consultation with regard
to research involving plants and/or the greenhouse, and to provide tours
when requested, 4) preparing plants for classes, and providing space for
class experiments, exercises, demonstrations and research projects, 5)
establishing a collegial atmosphere as supervisor and coordinator of
greenhouse operations, 6) working with the Greenhouse Committee to
maintain and operate the greenhouse, 7) maintaining an electronic
database of the plant teaching collection, and 8) supervising one to
three independent study students per academic term in general greenhouse
management practices.
We seek a person with a Master's degree in horticulture or plant
biology, a valid driver’s license, the ability to lift and carry heavy
loads occasionally, and who either has or will obtain a current
commercial plant pesticide applicator's license. We prefer candidates
who have prior teaching experience, as well as demonstrated knowledge
and experience in plant pathology, entomology, and a minimum of two
years experience in academic greenhouse operation and management. The
successful candidate will be expected to pursue professional development
to stay abreast of current trends and technologies in the field.
